What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is a technical system that extracts thermal energy from the environment and transfers it to a higher temperature level to heat or cool buildings. It utilizes physical processes for heat transfer and typically requires electrical energy to compress and expand a refrigerant in a closed-loop cycle. The result is a particularly efficient method of heat generation, producing significantly more usable heat than the electrical energy input.

In practice, this means that sources such as the earth, groundwater, or outside air serve as heat sources, while heating systems like underfloor heating, radiators, or hot water systems distribute the extracted heat. Heat pumps can be used in both new and existing buildings, with the building's condition and the existing heating surfaces significantly influencing efficiency.
